Halfway Review: The Fight of Our Lives

My review at the midpoint of "The Fight of Our Lives" is not exactly promising at this point.  Granted it's a short book, I've put about two hours into it so far and am halfway through.  I'm a pretty slow reader, preferring to listen to myself read in my own voice, in my head.

The title of the book and blurb gave this tome a sort of "William F. Buckley, Jr." feel to it.  I was hoping to get a large dose of conservative facts and information that would for the most part, make me a more informed information consumer.  However, Bennet & Leibsohn seem to be spending more time on the liberal response to the Middle East situation and Islam in America than they are spending on their own position.  If I want to see what liberal America thinks about any of the Middle East questions, all I have to do is turn on the television.

I picked up this book because I thought it would talk about Islam and Middle East issues from a conservative, and even Christian, perspective.  So far I am bored with the book and I am just getting the feeling that the authors are a little insecure in their own view, making a point not to expand on it, but rather to back up and tell me what the liberal establishment says to counter that point in an opposition sort of way.  I don't necessarily care what folks of a liberal bent have to say about our Middle East issues.

In general, I disagree on almost every point of the liberal view, on everything.  That doesn't mean I won't listen, but I've listened to both sides enough that I know that I personally disagree 95% of the time.  I feel that the liberal viewport is relatively small, and in most cases indicates a worldview in a delicate balance with some idea of 'harmony' that doesn't in any way reflect reality as we see it in the world.

So to read a book that gives me the liberal "comeback" stance for each one of the author's points is in most cases a rather discouraging, and time-wasting read.

As I agreed to review the entire book, and not just the first half, I will continue reading.

Thanks for caring and may God deliver blessings on you all,

-Dan.
